I'm surprised to see any stirrings of life here at all. I received my first issue on November 10, 2008 and have seen nothing since. I can't tell if there have been other issues that I did not receive or if it died on the vine after the first.

I have the pin to prove it but have paid for a year's subscription and goten only one issue. >:( :'(

Hail everyone,

I just finished putting up my Ohio Renaissance Faire pictures for this last weekend 10/17-18/09. What a really great time once again. And, although the weather was in the mid to high 40's on Saturday, it was great to be able to wear all the heavier garb. Sunday was a bit better being in the 50's. It was a super fun time with great friends.

Now, for anyone interested in the pictures, just follow the link below. Then click on the Ohio Faire link once there. Hope everyone enjoys them.

Hail everyone,

I finished putting up my Bristol week 8 pictures from this past Sunday 8/30/09. Was a great time as usual and said goodbye to everyone since it was my last Bristol day of the season. The weather was the best ever, being only in the mid 60's, YES, I said the mid 60's. It was nice to wear some warmer garb and enjoy it. For anyone interested, just follow the link below. Then click on the Bristol

This coming weekend I shall be traveling to Des Moines for the 3 week run of the Des Moines Renaissance Faire in Iowa. I will be there each day performing with the court, except for Labor Day itself. This is really a nice faire. I do hope to see many of my friends there. So, if anyone is going to be there this season, just send me a message and let me know.

Hail my friends,

I have just finished putting up my Michigan Ren Faire pictures from opening weekend Sunday 8/23/09. I missed going last year so this was a total blast. Lots of fun with many good friends I have missed seeing as well as new ones I made. The weather was a little drizzly in the morning, but stopped and was overcast the rest of the day and in the low 70's. Couldn't ask for better there. I spent the day off and on with King Henry the Red of Shiabruck, went to listen to Owain Phyfe 3 times and did Queens tea in the castle with her majesty Elizabeth. Also met up for the RF Gathering and picture. Thanks to all my good friends there who I got to see again, you have always held a special place with me. You guys rock!! Anyway, for anyone interested, just follow the link below. Then click on the
appropriate link once there for the Michigan Renaissance Faire.

This coming weekend I shall be traveling back to Bristol for one last day before I must leave to perform in the court in Iowa through September. I will probably be there this Sunday 8/30/09. Hope to see many of my friends again to wish them well and say goodbye for the year there. I do hope I will still see many of them elsewhere after September when I go to Ohio and Mid Michigan faires. So, if anyone is going to be at these places, just send me a message and let me know.

And, on one other note, I was surprised and honored by Queen Catherine and King Edward of Iowa in elevating me to the title of Duke. It is an honor I will proudly uphold.

Have a great week,

Lord Clisto Seversword, Duke of York

Well, a guy named Sam posted on Renaissancefestival.com site, who is involved with this mag. I have highlighted what he had to say below -

Hi folks,

Sam here - with Wench Magazine.

Seems our arrival on the scene has ruffled a few feathers - sorry about that.

Sir Clisto: I say this with a grin, but that rarely conveys online: A few facts are incorrect, and a few conclusions obviously formed without facts. But we shant try to respond to each...though I will address a few... (All the contentions in your post may not be your own - they may be from the website you quoted? Not sure exactly where Sir Blackfox comments end, so please don't take this as an attack on you, just the facts/conclusions in the post.)

Wench Magazine is to be an annual publication, a hybrid magazine/directory. It is full-color and full-size. To try and compare Wench to Renaissance/RenReporter/Faire is apples and oranges. They are each fine pubs, but they do not do what we do, and we are not trying to do what they do.

We have always stated that we are family friendly - though we do not blush easily. Despite the contention that we will have a hard time moving units at Faires - we already have more than 100,000 units designated for delivery, and we do not go to press until early October. (BTW - our statement about number of units is still posted where it has always been, on our Ad Rates page)

Bad form for product submissions? As a professional Publishing House with more than 6 vehicles in print, ranging from political magazines to fashion & lifestyle magazines to regional newspapers, to (our first) Fantasy Novel in September 2009, sorry to disagree. Submissions are a great way for cash-strapped vendors and merchants to get exposure for their items that they can not otherwise afford through conventional ad buys. It is usually cheaper for a vendor to ship a piece of existing inventory rather than reach into the checkbook and diminish cash flow. We shoot the items that come in with our models in features/showcases and spreads. We also own a Model Management company - so we do not need to hire talent for the shoots.

Lot of domain names - yes, we own more than 500. When we put our marketing energy into a product, it gets noticed. Quality of website? Tomato/Tomahto. It is not designed for consumers, and it gets the job done.

I hope this clears up any misconceptions out there about Wench Magazine...though of course it won't stop the Haters. As to quality and legitimacy, pick up a copy when you go to Faire. See for yourself.

Sam

Personally I have to agree on your findings. I would probably wait until the first issue comes out to make sure some people have it actually in hand. The cover almost looks like the way Renaissance Mag sets theirs up to me. I used to write for them. Could also be a photoshop job. But, one never knows. I will try and see what I can come up with on this in my off time.

 Wench Magazine? WTF?

I've been getting notification from several IWG wenches and subscribers about some new outfit called "Wench Magazine." (www.wenchmagazine.com)

I have nothing to do with them but heard about these folks over a week ago and they keep changing their story. First they touted over 100,000 in distribution. . . when the fact brought up that Rennaisance has only 30,000, these new guys deleted that paragraph from their statement. Then when it was brought up that most faires are family-friendly and wouldn't sell such an adult-themed publication, all of a the words "family friendly" appeared on their site. I would be wary of them of them. . . It's in bad form to ask for product to review. . . if the creator wants a review, they'll send a press package. . .not an item. The amateur website is another "red flag."

I just saw something else on their site that makes it suspect. It's part of issuu which is like the CafePress of publishing. . . like "do it yourself" from home (takes no design or reporting talent). http://issuu.com/

Info on the "publisher":
Sam Kerillion
Kerodina Press
15732 Crabbs Branch Way
Rockville, MD 20855

1.888.726.4822
sam@kerillion.com

LOL Googlesearch "Sam Kerillion, Rockville, MD"

He owns a lot of domain names, but not a lot of substance. Most of the websites have the exact same copy (including the "different" novels!).

www.fairemagazine.com is a much better choice.

Just my opinion of course. . . so please do the research and make up your own mind as to the legitimacy of the publication.

I did have to clear the air early. . . me, like my hero Barney Fife, is all about the bud-nippin'. . . "you have to nip it . . . . nip it in the bud"

Now is a very good time to check the various SCA websites and forums for used tents, for many people have just "upgraded" during Pennsic War and are looking to sell their older ones. Or you might consider sewing your own -- there are several sites on the web that give detailed instructions, and there are a couple of good books available as well.

Don't know of any available for donation, but they're really not that hard to build, and there are plenty of free plans available on the web. Just be sure to use the best possible quality materials, high tensile metal parts, and the treb should be good for a dozen years or more...

I think that the last Renfest I could watch working trebuchets has gone the way of King Arthur. It was on a high school campus. I think that the high insurance liability costs have run trebuchets away from other nearby venues. Have you seen a trebuchet in action? They are a thing of beauty!

I'm trying to figure out how to get some Renfests around Oklahoma to bring them back. Does anyone have an idea how I can get the ball rolling again? Could I start a petition to give to the organizers of local Renfests?

I would think that if a festival roped off an area next to their grounds where they could set up a target or launch projectiles into a pond, it would be deemed safe by insurance companies. I know that several high school teachers & professors around here love to show off their trebuchets. I don't think that it costs lots of money to bring one to a Renfest.

Is it a lot harder than this? Is there something I'm missing? I remember that large crowds would gather to watch trebuchets in action. They are definitely a crowd pleaser.

[Quote]

Hello my friends,

I have some news about the Upper Wisconsin Renaissance Faire. I know people have been asking questions and waiting to hear if there is any new news about it, so I will try and shed some light on this situation. As many of you are aware, the Upper Wisconsin Renaissance Faire came into some troubled times and ended up having to file for bankruptcy this year. This was due to having a bad year in 2008 and not being able to meet the cost of what the main land owner wanted. So, this land in the meantime was put up for farm auction just this month to anyone wanting to purchase it. Before this time, vendors and others were told to remove any buildings or property they had on the site before the auction date. It was not known if there even would be a faire from any new owner of the land. This is where things have been.

Well, the auction has now completed and the new owners of the land are supposedly going to try and keep a faire going on the current property. This consists of some people who were involved before, but not any of the main core owners except for the main land owners. Many of the people you have all come to know are not in it. See the article on the sale and plans for the old area below –

http://www.chippewa.com/articles/2009/07/30/news/doc4a71f0f76eb14722441556.txt

At this point I want to interject, that during all of this, WE, of the main core of owners from before have been looking for a new location to have our original faire. We have looked at several locations and have found one which we like very much and suites everyone well. Therefore, I want to make it clear, that although these new owners of the Chippewa land are saying they are going ahead with the faire, it WILL NOT be the faire that everyone knew. It will be a different entity all together and possibly wont even be Medieval, but are unsure until it happens. And, they may try and make it similar. Also, the name Wisconsin Renaissance Faire is still owned by the originals and will carry forward to the original rebirth faire to happen as well in 2010, but the same as everyone knew it to be. So, there will be the possibility of TWO faires, but only one will be like it was, and that one will be at a new location, owned by rennies, performers and vendors.

The land which we have seen and have at our disposal is a great area with way easier access. It is between Glennwood City and Downing, Wisconsin, closer to the Minnesota border. We have already established that the two individuals who have the land are willing to run some of the faire as one is the rennie that owns the land and they have shown heavy involvement now. Thus, we ARE looking at having the REAL Original Wisconsin Renaissance Faire in 2010, for three weekends from the last weekend in July and the first two weekends in August. This has been moving along at a good pace for now. It will start out smaller as it should have done, and we will go from there. Yes, we are aware it will run when Bristol is on and it will also end the weekend before Minnesota Faire opens. There are reasons for this which I will not go in to at this time. Anyway, this is the information I have at this point. I hope this will clear up some things and the uncertainty. In the meantime, if anyone has any questions, please e-mail me and I will try and answer what I can. Below is a link to a map of Glennwood City, Wisconsin.

Hello again my friends,

My Bristol Renaissance Faire pictures are now up for week three 7/25 - 7/26/09. It was another great weather weekend, with mild temps and mid humidity. And, this past weekend I had my son with me. This is his first day of the season since last year when he only got to go once. He had a grand time, especially since he could finally drink some ale and have a cigar at faire. So we did a small father/son pub crawl and took it easy. It was nice to have him be able to go and not worry about college or work. We had a super time. And, he wanted me to thank all the new people he got to meet and talk to, as well as many old friends he got to see again. He should be back with me a few more times this
year. Some have said he is a mini-me, but i will leave that up to everyone else. So, if anyone is interested in seeing the pictures, just follow the link below. Then click on the appropriate link once there and go to the bottom of the page to week 3.

http://www.sirclisto.com/51main.html

In other news, this coming weekend of August 1st, I will be traveling to the land of Michigan to attend the Silver Leaf Reanissance Faire in Battle Creek. This weekend is "Wizard's and Warrior's" weekend. I like this faire since it is smaller and more personable. Lots of different vendors with many unique things at reasonable prices as well. After faire, I will be heading back and getting rested up for Bristol this Sunday the 2nd. So, if anyone is going to be at Silver Leaf this Saturday, be sure to write and
let me know.

I am also getting together some items I have had for faire and no longer use that I am going to be getting rid of. Most will be going for a very reasonable price. Some garb, some weapons and some pewter mugs etc. just to name a few. I will put a few items up on my site at a time and if anyone is interested, they can e-mail me. A few items I have are NEW. So, as I do this, I will post a message online with a link to see the item or items. If anyone is looking for any of the few things I already mentioned above, write and let me know and I can tell you what I have.

I did manage to get a HUZZAH sticker, which is on the back window of my car,I have been asked by several people what it means, which also gives me an excuse to tell them to come to MDRF ,Maybe I should hit the King up for a commission?

Looking Forward to meeting some of you at MDRF & Sharing a tankard or 5

Hail my friends,

Last night I finished putting up my Bristol Renaissance Faire week 1 pictures from this past weekend 7/11 - 7/12/09. Was a nice time had by all. It was great to see many of my friends I have not seen since last season, as well as other performers. It was also a pleasure to meet several new people from the boards and other faires. And, our very own Bishop of York, from the Upper Wisconsin Faire made the journey down on Sunday as well. The weather was in the low 80's, but the humidity was only in the 40's, making it very comfortable. I wish all weekends were like this one. Anyway, the faire runs until labor Day, so there is plenty of time to stop down this summer. I may be at Silver Leaf in Michigan next weekend instead of Bristol, but then should be back after that. I will see as it gets later in the week. If anyone is going to be there, let me know.

This past Monday, on July 6th, our son Dustin turned the big 21. HUZZAH!!! Many of you have seen and met him from when he was real little and especially when he was made squire at court from the Queen back in 1997. He went out the night before with close friends at midnight to celebrate just after the hour. And before anyone asks, NO, he didn't get messed up. He and his close friends don't drink. They went out to shoot pool until closing and it is at a place you have to be 21. I was still up watching a movie when he came home and I wished him his happy day. We stayed up and talked about faire and some other things for a bit before he went to bed. Hopefully he will be able to have time off to get to faire with me this season. He has been going with me since the age of 5 and last year he could only go once due to school and work. He has school throughout the summer for College with a little break. He is designing and building video games as well as mixing video game music for them. We are very proud of him and what he has accomplished, but more for being a good clean adult. They really do grow up fast. Anyway, congratulations to him, and may there be many more to come. Now he gets to grow old like the rest of us. LOL

Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well and having a great faire season so far. And, by the looks of many postings on here and other boards, it seems to be true. Lately, I have been getting some other things done before Bristol starts in a few weeks. Wish I could go to faire all the time but I can't. Real life does rear it head from time to time. But, through all of this, I did manage to make a great find when I have had a little time to get away. One of the things I do collect are "Meerschaum Pipes". Not only do they smoke cooler, burn tobacco more easily and go good with faire garb, they are also beautiful works of art which over time change color to bring out their wonderful carved detail. Not to mention, they are usually very expensive. Meerschaum is a compact massive variety of the mineral sepiolite, a hydrous magnesium silicate hydroxide hydrate and it is mainly found in Turkey and the Asian areas, although it is in other places around the world.

So far, I have five in my collection, three of which were brand new when I purchased them. And, most are all normal size from 6 to 8 inches in length. But, as I was up North this past Friday on some faire business, I stopped in at a few antique shops and found the beautiful pipe pictured in the links below.

http://www.sirclisto.com/pipe/pipe1.jpg
http://www.sirclisto.com/pipe/pipe2.jpg
http://www.sirclisto.com/pipe/pipe3.jpg
http://www.sirclisto.com/pipe/pipe4.jpg

And, it was the buy of a lifetime. This gorgeous Meerschaum pipe is 17" long from stem to beard, is very ornately carved and has never been smoked. A pipe like this, in most places, usually sells for over $600.00. This was in a cabinet and had been marked down several times from around $500.00 to a firm final price of only $75.00. I could not believe it. Suffice it to say, I had them open the cabinet, I looked it all over with my magnifying glass and am not the proud owner. I have yet to light it up, but I soon will. Anyone who knows pipes knows what I am talking about. Anyway, I wanted to post pictures of it here for any pipe or non-pipe lovers alike, just to show what a beautiful piece of artwork these pipes are. Can't wait to use it with some of my garb.

On another note, I am now in the process of preparing for the Bristol Ren Faire which is to open its season on July 11th. I do hope to see many of you there who can make it. I also have many other faires I will be doing from that point on. I will post my schedule here as well as some other boards. In the meantime, I hope that everyone's faire season is wonderful. And, if anyone happens to be going to any that I will be at, make sure and let me know so we can possibly meet up. But for now, I am must be gone.

Dream the Dream and Live the Fantasy,

Lord Sir Clisto of York

Aye! I've been fairing this spring. I've also been working on 3 websites. And my wife & I are also in the process of moving. Fortunately, we're only going 20 miles. (How many leagues would that be?)

This Saturday, I'll have my "Meister's Realm" booth open at the Oklahoma Celtic Festival. It should be jolly good fun!

How many faires have you been able to frequent this spring?

Hail everyone,

I just finished posting my pictures from the Dubuque Renaissance Faire from this past weekend 5/30-31/09. What a great time!! The weekend could not have been better in every way. I got to see many old friends and meet a lot of new ones. And, it is always a pleasure to perform with Queen Catherine and her court. This event runs for only one weekend, and is a fund raiser for the Dubuque Museum of Arts. So, if anyone is interested, just follow the link below to see the pictures.

Hail everyone,

Well, I made it back to Milwaukee safe and sound by 9:00pm Sunday night from Dubuque, Iowa. It was a pleasure to meet all the new people I did while performing with the court, as well as many old friends I have not seen in some time. We even have a few friends from Bristol show up. I had a great time there with their court as always. The weather was fantastic by being in the high 70's to very low 80's if that. I even bought a few things to take home since everything was so reasonable. All of the patrons were smiling and having a lot of fun with all of us. I took over 280 pictures, of which I should have about 100 posted this week. Got them resized already and will start putting them up online. It was great helping out to raise money for their Museum of Arts. Anyway, I will post once my pictures are up. In the meantime, here is a small TV spot that was done there, on I believe Saturday with us and a few others about the faire. I believe it was on channel 7. If anyone hasn't seen it, it is real nice. Hail everyone,

I finally finished putting up my Mayfaire Renaissance Faire pictures from this past weekend when I went to Marshall, Michigan 5/23/09. What a great time!!! The weather was warm and the company even better. Saw many faces I haven't seen in some time and was well received. This little event is pretty much all in the woods making for a more realistic event. I loved it. I was also asked to play along in court. I hope to go back next year as well. Week One:
Although Saturday's gate count was just over 500 folks, every one of them had an incredible time at The Virginia Renaissance Festival. The new vendors were awesome and some of the more seasoned vendors had permanent buildings!! The place is growing in leaps and bounds and if you need to get your faire-on, this is the event to start with.

Saturday saw some personal ups and downs (literally ups and downs). Up because folks like Mike & Joanne, Blair and April, showed up to hang with me for a bit in the new version of the Pyrates Way/Faire Magazine tent (when it was up). Then came a huge gust of wind and pulled the whole thing down. . . . so I had to set it up as version #2 which held up the rest of the day. Then the big winds and über-rain started and I took the tent down myself during the night . . . . put it all away as the rains got worse in the a.m. and bugged out before the show opened. VARF also experienced some wind/rain damage, including a corner of the pub tent collapsing (repairs were underway when I left).

I STILL had a blast and can't wait to get back down there this coming weekend as all the McCrack family show up to party. I'm going down there early on Friday to set up tent version #3 (de-bugging and redesign has been underway since 6 a.m.).

Go to : www.varf.org for more information on the festival and then GO!

Archery is good --- but you're not a REAL fanatic until you go about making your own bow and arrows. Did that several years back, still try to keep up with it when I can (Damme me, but it be bloody difficult to set up an archery range in an apartment building! But if the building is ever attacked, I can pick off the attackers from the sixth floor balcony!)

And of course you have to get an Archer's T-Shirt that reads, "Go ahead and run! You'll only die tired!"

Hail everyone,

I just finished posting all the pics I took from the Tennessee and Georgia Renaissance Faire's this past Saturday and Sunday May 2/3. It was a real blast with a lot of great people and new friends. A little rain off and on in Tennessee but it was a super time. Georgia, on the other hand, was in the 80's and fantastic all day until we were leaving the faire at closing. That's when we got hit with the big winds and storms that went through. But both days turned out to be worth the journey. There were even a few other Bristolians there. Thanks to all the great people I met. So, for anyone interested, just go to the link below and then click on the faire you want to view. I hope you all like them. Enjoy!!

I checked again at 9am and voila, the package had arrived. Directly after work, I went to Newark to check my mail box. When I suscribed, I also ordered the first issue reprint, which arrived last week. What arrived today was a second copy of issue 1. Back to square one!

USPS Tracking is updated every evening. As of this morning (04/06/09) tracking still indicates the magazine is on its way from Wilmington to Newark. Grrrrr!

There is a reason USPS is called snail mail. I received an email March 25th saying the issue had been mailed and had a USPS tracking number. I diligently checked every day. March 28th the link said the package had left Philadelphia. Although it is only 40 miles from Philly to Wilmington, DE, the next listing said the package had left Wilmington on April 2nd. 5 days, 40 miles. Next stop is Newark, DE, which is 10 miles from Wilmington. Not there yet. It is rumored in an economy move, the USPS is using 3 legged donkeys with arthritis to pull the mail trucks to save on gas. Of course the magazine is sent via media mail. I suspect this means it is sent by way of Media, PA. UPS is much faster than USPS. UPS Ground coast to coast is usually 7 days or less. In the Boston to Delaware corridor, UPS Ground only takes 1 day. I know this because I handle the shipping at work and we usually get Ground packages overnight from NYC. I'd prefer not to get a shipping notice... surprise me rather than torture me!

Yesterday I went to a Kite Festival held on the grounds of Gunston Hall in Virginia, the Colonial home of George Mason. I brought the Renaissance Bubble Machine, which for the day, became a Colonial Bubble Machine because I was wearing colonial garb. In the Museum Shop I purchased a T-Shirt with "Huzzah!" on the front of it. A tag attached to the shirt read " Huzzah! An exclamation of encouragement, excitement or appreciation first used by sailors. In colonial times, a joyful shout of 'Hurrah' or 'Cheers' was 'Huzzah!' '. What else to say but "Huzzah!".

Good day my friends,

I have a quick exciting announcement which I would like to post. As you are all now aware, the Upper Wisconsin Renaissance Faire was canceled for this years 2009 season. This has not changed. But, it will be returning in 2010, with many new changes for the better, starting with a new location and easier to get to. Much is still in the planning stages at the moment, so I am not at liberty to go into other specifics at this time. But, I wanted to get this out here to shed some new light to all the rennies who have attended in the past, those who have been looking forward to this faire, and everyone else who wants to never see a faire wither away. This will continue to be a place to enjoy your hobby. What I have been told so far is very exciting and I look forward to sharing it all with everyone soon. Thanks to all of you who have prayed and sent your wonderful comments about this issue. They have gone LOUDLY noticed. I will keep everyone posted as things become available, but for now, its a BIG HUZZAH and keep looking here for more information.

Respectfully,
Lord Sir Clisto of York

I hate this! Too many faires are going under or are being postponed due to the economy! I'm seeing it in forums from all regions of the country. Don't people realize that now is the time to go ahead & start businesses & put on events to help stimulate the economy?

Prices for construction are down as the demand for goods & materials has lowered. More performing acts should be available since there aren't as many faires to go around. Gas prices are less than half of what they were last year so patrons & playtrons should be able to travel farther & easier to see Ren events.

I'm glad that the Joplin, MO Renaissance Festival has decided to push on through the prospect of a bad economy. They had decided to cancel their event this year but instead moved it from April to July. Godspeed to their event.

I hope that others see the need now to continue their Renfaires & even start new ones. Oklahoma's biggest (the Norman Medieval Faire) started during the recession of the mid-70's. Now it draws 300,000 in 1 weekend. Let's not give up! Let's push on through so people can have a place to go forget about the rat race!

Urgent UPDATE Upper Wisconsin Renaissance faire

ATTENTION UPDATE!!!

I was just notified as of yesterday by the president of the faire, Wednesday 2/25/09, that due to economic reasons and the faire now looking for a buyer, the Upper Wisconsin (Medieval) Renaissance Faire has been canceled for this year. If something happens in the meantime, this could change, but we can not count on that at this time. This is a sad time in our economy and it is impacting everyone and every business including other faires, but we are looking ahead to opening again next season in 2010. Please keep a watch for further developments to come in the near future. E-mail me if you would like any more information:sirclisto1@sbcglobal.net
